Born in Pontypridd and attended Pontypridd
Grammar School. My first post was in the Treasurer’s Dept of the former
Glamorgan County Council working in the Taxation dept issuing
driving and road fund licences.
I then spent a few years in the Royal Air
Force before going into College and qualifying as a teacher. During the
next 15 years I taught in Secondary Schools in Buckinghamshire and north
Worcestershire specialising in Mathematics.
In 1971 I moved back to South Wales, living
in Bridgend and teaching in the School for the Visually Impaired. This
was a residential school taking children from all over Wales and the
south-west of England. During this time I taught most subjects excluding
music and domestic science most being taught through the medium of
Braille. In the years before I retired in 1996 I was responsible for all
Braille production and copying throughout the school, all electronic
braillers, ‘talking computers’ teaching word processing and computer
skills and finally training support assistants in Braille and the
production of audio, visual and tactile aids.
Over the years I have been chairman of the
South Wales Association of Teachers of the Visually Impaired (SWATVI),
treasurer of the Welsh Sports and Recreation for the Visually Impaired (WSARVI),
member of the College of Teachers of the Blind, and of latter years
treasurer of the Bridgend and District Amateur
Radio Club.
